Where does your money go?

Cancer is the number one killer disease in Singapore today with one out of four Singaporeans being affected by cancer during their lifetime. Data from the Singapore Cancer Registry shows a dramatic rise in the incidence of cancer in the last 30 years - a yearly increase rate of 3.7 per cent.

Since 1993, the Run, previously named "Terry Fox" has been organized by Four Seasons Hotel Singapore and The Regent Singapore in conjunction with the Singapore Cancer Society. A self-funding voluntary welfare organization, the Singapore Cancer Society, views research as a vital aspect in its move towards total Cancer control, treatment and care.

The Run's Organizing Committee do not seek government funding for administration or fundraising costs. Instead, they rely on the generosity of the private sector and volunteers to support research activities in the hope of finding a cure for cancer.

Funds raised each year are distributed as Research Grants in Singapore. Every year, the Singapore Cancer Society receives numerous requests of funding for Cancer research from doctors, researchers and oncologists. After a stringent evaluation, its Executive Committee awards these Research Grants.

In 2004, The Cancer Institute (TCI) and National Healthcare Group (NHG) were awarded the "Cancer Research Grant 2004" amounting to S$200,000 by the Singapore Cancer Society. The grant, allocated through the Run's Fund went towards the following cancer research project of Asso.Prof. CS Chen: "Preemptive CD8+ T-cell depleted donor lymphocyte infusion following nonmyeloablative stem cell transplantation: A novel cellular therapy for acute myeloid leukemia or myelodysplastic syndrome"

In 2005, Research grants of S$100,000 raised from the Run were each given to The Cancer Institute (TCI) and National Cancer Centre (NCC):

* Professor Yoshiaki Ito from The Cancer Institute (TCI): "The Role of RUNX3 in colorectal carcinoma and in colorectal cancer precursor leslons:relation in sporadic molecular pathways and syndromic colorectal cancer".

*Professor Chia Kee Seng from The Cancer Institute(TCI): "Discovering ethnic differences in gene-environment interactions in major cancers: Breast Cancer".

*Dr Balram Chowbay from National Cancer Centre (NCC): " Pharmacokinetic and pharmacogenetic profiling of rituximab in combination with dose intense CHOP chemotherapy in Asian patients with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma".

*Dr Tan Min-Han from National Cancer Centre (NCC): "Global chromosomal profiles of single-nucleotide polymorphisms of kidney cancer tissue in association with global expression and tyrosine kinome studies".

Your contribution goes towards funding important research on cancer, in the hope that one day the world will find a cure. All proceeds from Run For Hope 2007 will go to grants awarded to clinical researchers in Singapore for cutting-edge cancer research. The grants will be awarded by the Singapore Cancer Society after a rigorous review process.

In 2006, over $200,000 raised from the Run for Hope was awarded to two researchers - Dr Yap Soon Sim and Dr Darran Lim of the National Cancer Centre Singapore.

In 2007, $255,448 fund were granted to the following reseach institutions in Singapore:

Dr Aung Lele, Department of Paediatrics, National University Hospital Research project: Childhood cancer: The Hidden Medical and non-medical costs and it’s impact on the family Amount Awarded:$40,000.00
